Materials are the stuff of life. New materials appear as everyday objects and in high-tech applications all around us. Virtually every engineering component owes its existence at some level to a knowledge of fundamental engineering materials behaviour.
Materials research activities range from enquiry into the fundamental atomic or molecular building blocks of matter, to the design, synthesis and characterisation and simulation of materials with desirable properties for technological application. The materials being studied are as diverse as silicate films grown from solution on surfactant templates, polymers and porous ceramics, electronic and novel non-linear optical materials, bio-materials and composites.
