Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
By research
The aim of a PhD research degree is to train students in the skills and techniques necessary to carry out independent research, either individually or as part of a team.
The student and supervisor initially specify individual projects jointly. The nature of research is that the focus of the project will change in line with what is discovered. As the project progresses, the student will be expected to take more control of its direction.
A key part of all projects is peer review through the presentation of conference papers, journal papers and local seminars.
All students in the Department of Engineering are provided with funds to attend at least one international conference during their degree.
The duration of the PhD is 2-4 years (3 years average) full time study.
